Salmon Swimming Your Way

POCATELLO – Celebrate the unbelievable migration of salmon with Tight Line Media and Idaho Museum of Natural History Sept. 2 at Frazier Hall on Idaho State University’s campus. 

Ocean to Idaho visually documents salmon migration 850 miles from Oregon’s coast to Idaho’s wilderness.  Follow the journey during this half-hour film while honoring the remarkable return of the few dozen fish that reach the finish line. 

Outdoor journalist Kris Millgate spent a decade in TV news before starting Tight Line Media in 2006. With a  quarter century of multimedia storytelling, Millgate traverses the country in search of dynamic topics. She  researches issues thoroughly then translates core elements via video, photo and words with credibility that  demands audience. Her expertise shines when dealing with regional issues like the decline of salmon in the  Pacific Northwest. 

“The homeward migration of salmon to the mountains of Idaho is one of nature's most epic journeys,” says Leif  Tapanila, museum director. “We're excited to bring this film and Kris's journalistic expertise to Pocatello to  discuss salmon at such a critical time.” 

Millgate lived and worked out of a Toyota Tundra paired with a Four Wheel Camper to produce Ocean to Idaho. She tracked salmon migration in the Pacific Northwest solo during the pandemic and, just like the fish, she fell apart along the way. 

“Migrating salmon take a beating coming home and so did I,” says Kris Millgate, Tight Line Media CEO. “I  didn’t want my challenges taking over the screen so I moved my struggles to the printed page and dedicated  the film to showcasing salmon. They’re disappearing in the Pacific Northwest and that’s bigger than anything I’m dealing with.”
