Have you ever tasted a perfect cinnamon roll? If you are on a quest to find the best of the best, then look no further than Idaho Falls. Mrs. Powell’s Bakery was bought by owner Amy Romriell four years ago. The business has flourished under her care, remaining fully operational in its three locations despite the ups and downs produced by the pandemic.

Before purchasing Mrs. Powell’s Bakery, Amy was searching for something that would not only keep her busy as her children grew into adulthood, but also allow her to practice her passion -- baking.

How did she develop a love for baking? Amy’s mother, a self-taught cook.

Amy is the eldest of six children, which led her mother to economize by hand-making sweets for her family, which included bread, cookies, pies and more. Amy’s mother passed all of her knowledge down to her daughter,—skills Amy now brings with her as she runs Mrs. Powell’s.

Having grown up purchasing cinnamon rolls from Mrs. Powell’s, it was a dream come true when Amy received the opportunity to purchase the business.

This isn’t the first time the business has changed ownership, The Eastern Idaho based bakery has switched hands several times throughout the years, but Amy is determined to not only make the shop her own, but leave a permanent mark on the recipes.

“Each owner kind of put their own spin on certain items, but I think the original cinnamon rolls kind of remained throughout,” Amy said. “I just have my own ideas about how things should be. And so I did make small changes to everything. The frosting is completely different from what I came into.”

Amy has a firm belief that cinnamon rolls should be consumed the day they are made, which is why she only sells freshly made goods behind the counter. Rolls not consumed that same day are wrapped up and sold for 50% off the next day. After that, they are donated. So, you can rest assured that anytime you visit a Mrs. Powell location you are getting the best of what they have to offer every day.

Deciding what roll to purchase can be a difficult task if it’s your first time at the bakery. Amy has a few recommendations to get you started, including the caramel nut rolls and maple frosting topped cinnamon rolls. One thing to keep in mind is that rolls are enormous and rich, making them perfect to split with a friend or split into two treats. The bakery also offers gluten-free options, which are frequently featured as a treat of the month on the Mrs. Powell social media sites.

Mrs. Powell’s doesn’t just sell cinnamon rolls, though those are certainly their specialty. The bakery also offers a full lunch menu, which contains sandwiches and soups made from scratch. One of their most popular lunch items is the gourmet grilled cheese. Other top sandwiches include the frenchie (a french dup style sandwich) and the Thanksgiving version of the grilled cheese, which includes cream cheese, cranberry and turkey.

Two years ago Mrs. Powell added two new locations to their roster (Idaho Falls and Rigby), leaving Amy satisfied with the businesses’ growth and optimistic about the future. Although you might not be able to get your cinnamon roll at the Pocatello mall anymore, we’re sure you will find something to love about these wonderful storefront locations.
