A trip to the emergency veterinary clinic is the last stop anyone wants to make, but a sense of gratitude is still overwhelming for Idaho Falls pet owners when they arrive at a 24/7 emergency clinic. The Idaho Falls Emergency Vet Clinic began offering around-the-clock services this year to accommodate a growing need for emergency care.

“The community is growing and we’ve got a lot of new people coming into town,” shared Medical Director, Dr. Chris Bailey. “As we grow, the human-animal bond is changing. People, both locally and nationally, are prioritizing higher levels of care for their pets.”

The vet treats everything from typical pets, including cats and dogs, to less common critters like ferrets, hamsters and wild animals, such as birds. Dr. Bailey has even performed an emergency mass removal on a hamster, but cases like that are certainly the exception.

So, what is the most frequent injury bringing pets to the emergency vet? Animals hit by cars.

As the community grows, areas that used to be sleepy and quiet are beginning to see more traffic. Accident prevention has an easy solution for dogs, including the use of a leash, as well as a better awareness of your surroundings.

One of the second most common occurrences that brings dogs to the vet is chocolate ingestion. This problem grows during the holiday season when sweet treats abound and pets get into things their digestive tracts aren’t able to handle. Chocolate in particular is toxic to dogs, bringing on a need for emergency care if a large quantity is ingested.

There are a number of ways to prevent accidents, such as leashing your pet and ensuring nothing is within their reach Keeping your pet fit by watching what it eats and taking it on frequent walks can help it to stay in shape, which always gives it a better chance at enjoying life in the long-term. Still, you can rest assured that when the worst happens, there are professionals in our area ready to care for your pet.
