After a two year hiatus, the War Bonnet Roundup returned in 2011 to celebrate its 100th birthday. Now aging gracefully at 102, the 2013 event has wrapped up another great year with its return to Sandy Downs on August 1-3.
Idaho Falls magazine staffers were on hand to capture the rodeo in all its down-home charm and excitement. (In addition to our normal coverage with still cameras, we also captured some great video thanks to the efforts of our editor's daughter, Compass Academy freshman Gibson Smede. Good job, Gibs!)
The first War Bonnet Roundup was help back in 1912, at what is now Tautphaus Park. It was organized by a committee of eleven local businessmen who raised $5000 in sponsorship money from local merchants to organize a rodeo similar to the one that was held in Jackson Hole in 1911. From those beginnings the War Bonnet Roundup has grown to be Idaho’s Oldest Rodeo and continues to bring the best cowboys and stock to town every year.
“The War Bonnet is a great place for families to come and see some world class talent right here in Idaho Falls. It’s a tradition going back generations,” said Bob Skinner, War Bonnet Committee Chairman.
