Unfinished Business

When physical and mental wage war

I started training for a 100k (62 miles) trail race in January. I finished a 50k (31 miles) last year and in some creepy, wild way, I really enjoyed the challenge. A 100k run in Idaho wilderness seemed like the natural progression of my goal-oriented character, but I quickly discovered there’s nothing natural about what you’re asking of your body and your brain when you commit to 100k.

I lost pounds, inches, sleep and sanity. I threw in whole-heartedly for nutrition, hydration and mileage. I fit in runs at any time of the day and in any place across the nation. If I wasn’t running, I was eating. And wishing I was sleeping.
