For the last 50 years, Rosie Dobson has been a dominant force in the Idaho Falls golf scene. Now, at 85 years old, you can still find her out on the course on any given day of the week, putting away. In fact, Rosie’s car has a hitch which allows her to trailer around her own golf cart. “I load up and do most of the maintenance on it myself,” said Rosie. “Then I back it down about 100 feet of driveway.” Besides still loading her own cart, this golfer makes a lot of her own clubs, both woods and irons. Through a golf supply magazine, she orders the shaft, grips and other necessary supplies. Then she specially wraps the handles onto the shaft and glues the head. Her husband, Earl, taught her how to do this many years ago and it’s something she still loves to do. A Golfer is Born Rose began golfing in 1964 and has purchased a season pass every year since. If you’re doing the math, that’s 50 solid years of supporting the local courses. “In 1963, I was recovering from major surgery and was still hurting pretty bad,” says Rosie. “My husband had plans with the neighbors to go golfing in Rexburg and, even though I couldn’t play, I went along with him.” Earl got up her up close to the greens and Rosie had a feeling that she may have stumbled onto a hobby. “I thought I might like it, so in the spring of ’64, my husband got me a small set of clubs,” says Rosie. “I fell in love with the game and I have played ever since.” She took one set of lessons from the Pinecrest Pro at the time, George O’Rullian. “He gave me one piece of advice I’ll never forget,” says Rosie. “He said ‘Don’t be bashful about getting those hips swinging to get them into position.” A notch above Par Golf is not only a hobby but it is something that Rosie has excelled at. She has golfed at Invitational Tournaments all over and has some extremely impressive claim to fames. She has won the Intercity Invitational Tournament six times, the Pinecrest Woman’s Tournament four times and the Sandcreek Tournament once. She has even been voted Ms. Congeniality and won the Most Improved Golfer several times. Then in 1997, the Lady’s Golf Association gave Rosie a Lifetime Membership.
