Picking a Furry Friend

5 items to consider before becoming a pet parent

Selecting an animal can be difficult, and there are a lot of things to consider before you choose one that’s the correct fit. We love pets and want both the animal and owner to be happy, so here are five tips to help you decide.

1. Ask yourself, “Why do I want a pet?” If you want a pet just because they’re cute, that’s fine, but are you prepared to actually provide for one? They aren’t toys or decorations; they’re living creatures and owning one is a big responsibility. If you decide you’re not quite ready to provide for a pet, then that’s fine. Remember, you can always get a pet later in life.

2. Know the law. It seems like common sense, but it’s still a very important thing to remember. Think about your state laws and find out what type of pets you’re allowed to own in the area. Maybe you want to buy a pet that you need a license for, which you’ll need to consider as well.

3. Consider your financial situation. Animals can cost a lot of money, and I’m not just talking about the adoption price. You need to consider the price of vet trips, toys and other necessities such as food and licenses. Say your animal gets really sick or badly injured, are you financially stable enough to deal with those bills?

4. Evaluate your living situation. Some animals need more space than others. If you live in an apartment, you may have limitations on the size or type of pets you can own. They may not allow dogs, loud animals or something else entirely.

5. Question how your pet will fit into your lifestyle. Not only do you need to be able to financially provide for your pet, but you also need to provide them with companionship. Consider how much time you spend at work. If you travel a lot, are you choosing an animal that can travel with you? If not, do you have someone responsible to care for your pet when you’re gone?
