Considered the tragic low point for a once-prominent species, a single male sockeye salmon discovered at the end of his trip to Redfish Lake in 1992 that there were no female salmon to mate with. The daughter of a fish hatchery technician named this single fish Lonesome Larry and, with the combined efforts of local organizations, the salmon population has since partially rebounded. Ongoing effort is still needed to help the sockeye salmon prosper in Idaho’s waters. Listen in as panelists and a-fish-ionados Topher Jones, Founder of the Lonesome Larry Project, and Dan Baker, Idaho Fish and Game fishery expert, discuss the history of the sockeye program and the monitoring activities today. Learn about how the Lonesome Larry Project is helping the Idaho Fish and Game trapping operations at Redfish Lake. Moderator Alison Espindola, Events and Rentals Coordinator at the Idaho State Museum, will discuss with the panelists why the events in 1992 occurred, what is being done today to help threatened fish species, and what you can do to help. If you have questions you would like to ask, you can email them to events@ishs.idaho.gov or submit them live during the event. Pick up a scoop of ice cream or a cold beverage from our partner, The Stil Ice Cream Shop, and a Lonesome Larry t-shirt (only available for purchase at the Idaho State Museum’s M Store!) or socks prior to this Happy History Hour, then head home, get comfy, and tune in for a fish-tastic event! Register early for this complimentary event; space is limited to the first 100 registrants.
