In or out of the classroom, being a K-12 educator calls for more than teaching. A great teacher or principal should also inspire others and lead by example.

In light of Teacher Appreciation Week, one of our readers shared the amazing story of local Idaho Falls Assistant Principal Barry Parkes, who has lost a total of 122 lbs. -- one step at a time.

With the help of a Fitbit fitness tracker on his wrist, Parkes began joining his wife, Shauna, on her daily walks – and kept going. The pair walked between 3 to 6 miles every day until finally, Parkes dropped down to 203 pounds, marking a 122-pound weight loss in just a year and a half.
