The Idaho Falls Exchange Club’s slogan to “inspire our community to be a better place to live” might seem a bit general as a mission statement, but the group’s signature display couldn’t be more specific. Memorial Day weekend at Freeman Park will mark another awe-inspiring display of patriotism with 1,000 U.S. flags flying atop 8-foot poles in perfect rows, all leading up to the Vietnam War Memorial.

Each of the flags has been sponsored in recognition of service to our country. These sponsorships can honor any person, living or not, who deserves to be called a hero. Heroic veterans, first responders, firefighters and police officers are obvious examples, but potential recipients might also include teachers, coaches or parents.

Also honored in the display are the victims of child abuse.

Each sponsored flag receives a commemorative tag with the hero’s name and personal information. Information for veterans includes their branch of service, rank and conflict.

Memorial flags are also available for purchase by the sponsor. (A portion of the net proceeds generated from the flag sponsorships will be contributed to Veteran Service Organizations through the Idaho Falls Military Affairs Committee.)
