Got diamonds dancing around your daydreams? You’re not alone. Many a bride-to-be spends lots of quality time poring over the perfect ring. After all, it’s one of the longest-lasting symbols of the love that you and your beau share. However, an engagement ring is no ordinary accessory. Purchasing a diamond is a big investment, and couples may find themselves unsure of what to do.

Before you go to the jeweler, collect some inspiration and get an idea of what you like as far as diamond shapes, metals and styles. No two rings are exactly alike - they’re just as unique as the brides who wear them, so find something you love. It’s your ring and how it looks is totally up to you. “Today's girl gets what she wants,” says Stan Ingram of Ingram’s Fine Jewelers. “Brides are choosing what looks good on their hands.” Once you’re equipped with some inspiration, grab your guy and start shopping!

One important quality of a ring that you need to keep in mind is its overall value. Find something you love and make sure it’s worth every penny you pay on it. Also take careful note of the jewelers you’re shopping with. If a jeweler is willing to roll out the red carpet for you and stand behind the quality of the ring you’re hoping to purchase, then you can expect the same great service long after you’ve forgotten how much the ring cost.

While you’re on the hunt for the perfect ring, keep your purpose in mind. “Don’t forget the romance of buying a ring,” says Ingram, “This should be a fun and positive experience.” To put it bluntly: it’s less about the rock and more about you, your future husband and choosing a beautiful way to represent your love and commitment to one another. Don’t get discouraged if you don’t find the ring of your dreams on your first trip; keep your chin up and keep searching.

What about bands for your groom? Durability is a great quality to keep in mind, since men’s rings are likely to take on more wear and tear than an engagement ring will. Consider rings made with materials like titanium, tungsten, chrome, cobalt and a wide variety of others that your jeweler can show you. Gold and platinum are also great options for men’s rings, and are worth a chunk of change.

In the end, be sure that your ring is one you can be proud of. It’s a treasure that symbolizes something much more valuable than money can buy.
