Now entering its 8th year, Jackson's signature community obstacle course race is gearing up for a full day of mountain treks, mud crawls and climbing walls.

Created by experiential learning expert Tim Walther, The Ultimate Towner functions as an analogy of what it means to overcome adversity and support others to do the same. The event is set for Sunday, May 19 beginning (and ending) at Phil Baux Park. The race kicks off at 11 a.m.

This year's rendition serves as a benefit for the city's namesake community counseling center. It covers a circuitous route around Jackson that truly puts the “town” in Towner.

“The experience is 4 miles, 25 obstacles,” Walther said. “There’s a mountain climb, multiple mud crawls, climbing walls — just a varied series of experiences that are themed to inspire everyone who participates.”

Inspirational obstacles over the years have included an “Ultimate Elevation” warm-up routine, followed by the Karma Mud Crawl, Believe-Achieve Hurdles, Take The Plunge Rope Swing, Motivational Mist Spray and the Love-Life Wall at the race’s festive finish line.

Volunteers and spectators are welcome. Interested sponsors can contact Grand Dynamics International, the event's title sponsor, at info@granddynamics.com to get involved. According to Walther, costumes are encouraged, and all ages are welcome.
