I.F. Parks and Recreation director has been elected to the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) Board of Directors

City of Idaho Falls Parks and Recreation Director Greg A. Weitzel has been named as a member of the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) Board of Directors.  His election carries a three-year term starting in September, 2018. 

“Greg is a valued member of our team here in the city and has played a key role in helping take our parks and recreation system to a whole new level,” said Idaho Falls Mayor Rebecca Casper. “His election to the NRPA board highlights the professional work he has done for Idaho Falls.  I also believe it will give him unparalleled access to national-level best practices that will benefit our city in addition to the NRPA is receiving the benefit of a high-performing professional. This is very exciting no matter how you look at it.”

The NRPA Board of Directors is composed of up to 30 individuals from across the nation who demonstrate strong leadership skills, combined with passion and expertise in parks, recreation and conservation.  Board members are made up of parks and recreation professionals from cities, corporations, industry suppliers, commercial businesses, volunteers and civic groups from across the country. 

“I’m honored to be selected to serve on the NRPA Board of Directors representing Idaho Falls, southeastern Idaho and the Mountain West. Helping to chart the future of parks, recreation and conservation in America is a great privilege and responsibility, I’m looking forward to this opportunity to serve,” said Weitzel.     

“We are proud to have so many talented individuals with strong leadership skills serving on our board,” said Barbara Tulipane, CAE, and NRPA president and CEO, in a recent press release announcing the new board.  “Their combined expertise and passion for parks and recreation will help us achieve our goals moving the association forward.”

According to the organization’s website, the “[NRPA] is a national not-for-profit organization dedicated to ensuring that all Americans have access to parks and recreation for health, conservation and social equity. Through its network of 60,000 recreation and park professionals and advocates, NRPA encourages the promotion of healthy and active lifestyles, conservation initiatives and equitable access to parks and public space.
