Idaho National Laboratory has released the “INL Fiscal Year of 2016 Economic Impact Summary.” This report looks at all the economic impacts of INL operations on Idaho’s economy during 2016. The summary shows that INL increases Idaho’s total economic output by 20.4 percent, adding $1.9 billion to Idaho’s output.

INL Lab Director Mark Peters said INL takes pride in driving Idaho economics as the 6th largest employer in the state.

“We value our relationship with the state of Idaho and believe our continued collaboration is critical to the success of the laboratory in the coming years,” said Peters.

INL added over 480 employees to the company in 2016 and raised the annual average salary from $88,635 to $92,660. It also provided 7,199 more jobs, creating a total of 11,276 jobs in Idaho.

INL was able to provide more business to local restaurants and hotels through hosting more events in 2016 than in previous years.

Every-day management of INL is the responsibility of Battelle Energy Alliance (BEA). In 2016, BEA corporate offices donated $623,454 to charities mostly focusing on education needs.

INL’s national homeland security and nuclear energy research divisions have expanded job and business gains, including such areas of study as critical infrastructure, high performance computing, cyber security and small modular reactors.

“In the foreseeable future we continue to see a need to hire more engineers and scientists – not only to support replacing those who retire but to support the growth of our laboratory,” Peters said. “It is critical we strengthen our partnering with subcontractors, educators, and industry.”

INL hosted a partnering event in December in Idaho Falls to support its future growth. It will host another event in Boise on Jan. 17 to highlight subcontracting needs and grant opportunities, and give specifics on how to join with INL technology and employees to conduct research and development.

The Research & Business Development Center, based out of Rexburg, prepared the 2016 Economic Impact Summary, which is available online at https://www.inl.gov/inl-initiatives/economic-and-workforce-development/.

The summary only includes economic impacts for operations managed by BEA and do not include economic impacts of the U.S. Department of Energy cleanup contractor, the DOE or the Naval Reactors Facility.
