Looking to start up an organic garden in 2016? The Idaho Falls Community Garden Association might be a great place to start. While outdoor gardening activities rarely rev up prior to Easter (or for many of us, Memorial Day), there’s still plenty to do in the interim, and plenty to learn along the way.
For that purpose, consider the lineup of IFCGA-organized classes for this spring, to be held at the CHE Building at University Place. (Times are 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. unless noted otherwise.)
Jan. 16: Idaho Garden Calendar: A month-by-month growing guide, especially for southeast Idaho
Jan. 23: ICKK! Friend or Foe: Identification and organic control for east Idaho’s most common creepy critters.
Jan. 30: All About Herbs: Everything you want to know about growing and using your herbs.
Feb. 6: Fun Ways to Use your Harvest: A variety of delicious ways to use your bountiful harvest.
Feb. 13: Eastern Idaho Butterflies and Garden Myths: Fact or Fiction? Two fun and informative topics.
Feb. 20: (10 a.m. and 11 a.m.) Healthy Soil I: Know Your Soil. One-hour video class followed by live Skype with renowned soil scientist Dr. Elaine Ingham.
Feb. 27: Native Plants in the Home Landscape with Dr., Steve Love: An expert’s take on what, how and why
March 5: Healthy Soil II: Compost, Mulch and Cover. Cropping tips and techniques to improve your soil.
March 12: Seed Matters! The basics of saving seed and why it matters! Seed Swap immediately following.
March 12: Seedy Saturday: Third Annual Seed Swap. More info at ifcga.org
April 2: (12-2 p.m.) 2016 Garden Registration. Learn about the community gardens & register for your own garden spot. Development Workshop, Griffith Building, 2475 Leslie Ave., 9 am. Registration begins at 9 am (first-come, first-served)
