Summer is a kid’s favorite time of year, but it’s also one of the most dangerous.  Approximately 55 percent of children don’t always wear a helmet when riding a bike, according to SafeKids worldwide. Being outside is one of the best things a child can do, but some poor habits can result in injuries or worse. This month, law enforcement in Idaho Falls is partnering with Subway to change that.

During the month of August, officers will be keeping a sharp eye out for kids who are “Playin’ Safe.” Kids who are practicing safe habits such as wearing their helmets and other safety gear while riding their bikes or skateboards can earn Subway Cash Cards, good for a 6” sandwich at any Idaho Falls-area restaurant.

“Around summer, children often resort to television and video games  to keep themselves occupied, but Subway’s Playin’ Safe campaign encourages safe outdoor physical activity,” said Sgt. Jeff Edwards, of the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office. “This is a great opportunity for deputies with the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office to connect with neighborhood children and make it a positive experience for the kids as we recognize them while they are out and about.”

Officers from the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office, the Idaho Falls Police Department, and the Pocatello Police Department are participating in the Playin’ Safe campaign and will be watching for kids practicing safe habits.

“Summer is a great time for children to get out and play, and we want to encourage them to do this in a safe manner to reduce their chance of injury,” said Scott Sprague, a local Subway restaurant owner. “Subway restaurants are well known advocates for a healthy lifestyle and exercise, not just with adults, but with children. We are thrilled to offer the Playin’ Safe campaign to encourage a healthy lifestyle and encourage children to be safe while taking advantage of the beautiful outdoors this season.”

While we’ve still got some summer fun left, get outside and help your kids establish good habits to keep them safe in the future.
