1. Pick a spot with lots of sun.

2. Be wary of rabbits. Ol’ Bugs loves his carrots. Deer and rodents are also keen on them, so protect as needed.

3. Pack on plenty of compost, and mix it so the soil is easily crumbled between your fingers. Compacted soil is bad news for carrots. They’ll be stubby and unsightly.

4. Seed directly, right into the bed. No need for indoor starts. Space about 10 inches apart, or maybe eight if space is cramped.

5. Grow in a cage if needed. There are no problems with this since carrots are a root crop. They also do well in cold frames if you’re worried about frost. (Hint: In our neck of the woods, you should be.)

6. Water lightly to keep the soil moist, but don’t overdo it. A splash of compost tea every two weeks is a good idea.

7. Pick your carrots early for extra sweetness, especially varieties like “little finger” and “tender sweet.”
