Historic Downtown Idaho Falls has recently added another fantastic establishment to its growing list of local delights. Late last year, The Celt Pub - Idaho Falls, ID opened its handsome doors on the northwest side of the Park Avenue and Broadway intersection. The location is a win for all involved –a very visible spot with a now eye-catching remodel of a historic structure. Now, Out-of-towners will be even more likely to consider a stop in our blossoming, urban core as they pass through on Broadway.

Fittingly, the building that houses The Celt, was built in 1893 by an Irish politician. But it wasn’t until 1950 that the space was granted a liquor license and used as a bar. In the intervening period between then and now, the space has seen a number of businesses come and go. However, its most recent incarnation is not just the next chapter, but an entirely new book that should bring a little pride to Idaho Falls. The new owners, Marty & Shera Plumb and Janice and Jimmy McGeachin, have created something special.

Those who frequent Historic Downtown Idaho Falls know The Celt renovation involved a lot of labor and an obviously large helping of love. For eighteen months, the new owners, along with hired professionals, combined their many talents and transformed the space into something one might expect to find in Boston. There were surprises along the way, like a friendly red-headed ghost, but the unanticipated encounters with history seem to have worked in the community’s favor. Approach the wood and glass facade, open the large exterior doors, pass through the intelligently designed breezeway, and prepare yourself to be transported to a welcoming place where patrons are encouraged to spend some time and enjoy a break from the stresses of life.

It’s hard to say what feature first stands out in The Celt’s interior. The exposed brick speaks history, the lavish wood finishes create warmth, and the stained glass windows scatter light in a pleasant way. The actual bar, which runs the length of the main space, was custom designed by the owners and commissioned, hand built in Idaho. Ambient, multicolored LED lights provide amazing accents to the sparkling display of liquor bottles behind the bar.

After taking a seat, patrons can choose from an extensive selection of drinks and some nice culinary options from the menu. The basement is home to the largest keg room in Idaho Falls, which delivers beer to the 24 taps upstairs, and assures a large supply of Guinness. In addition to a variety of beers, The Celt offers 20 different vodkas, 15 rums, 10 gins, 20 liquors, and thanks to a rebirth of popularity, 70 different whiskeys, from American Bourbon to Irish Scotch.

The menu combines simplicity with flair. The mouthwatering Corned Beef Grilled Cheese, Rueben, and Pastrami are all served on a toasted Cuban roll. The Spicy Jameson and Heart Stopper Burger (with fried egg), will remind you that pub food is always satisfying. Sandwiches come with your choice of fresh cut fries, coleslaw, broccoli salad, potato salad, cup of soup, or small green salad. And of no little significance in Idaho Falls, The Celt is vying for the “best fries in town.” Hand cut, these Russets are blanched twice and baked.  If you want a truly authentic dish, go for the Fish & Chips or Cottage Pie. For those looking for something lighter, or perhaps an additional flavor, these appetizers are great for sharing: Coconut Shrimp with a citrus coconut sauce; Drunken Clams steamed in white wine and seasonings; Stuffed Mushrooms with beef and pork sausage; and Irish Potatoes mixed with corned beef, green onions, cheese and Thousand Island dressing.

In addition to its appealing architecture, diverse drink options and great pub food, The Celt is a great place to spend time enjoying friends. There is a Monday through Thursday early Happy Hour from 4:00-6:00 pm and a late night Happy Hour from 9:00-10:00. Every Saturday there is live music and they are adding additional evenings regularly. Acts come from Idaho Falls and as far away as Jackson and Park City.  When you are ready for a break from your routine, step into The Celt and discover a northeastern experience in Historic Downtown Idaho Falls.
